Ceramics Fair - The Dome, Buxton

Ceramics in the Round
The Dome, Buxton - Saturday 19th April & Sunday 20th April

Some of the greatest names in world ceramics will be taking their pots, plates and planters to Buxton this April, when Ceramics in the Round comes to The Dome for the first time on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 April.

Ceramics in the Round is the brainchild of Barry Wilson, formerly the Exhibitions Officer for the internationally-acclaimed Rufford Craft Centre in neighbouring Nottinghamshire. Apart from having curated nearly eighty exhibitions over twenty-three years at the Centre, Wilson has been the driving force behind Earth and Fire, the international Ceramics fair that for the last fifteen years has attracted exhibitors from as far away as Japan and Australia, and brought hundreds of thousand of visitors to Rufford Country Park.

Wilson has now launched his own company, Earthmarque, through which he will be staging a series of major craft events across the UK. Ceramics in the Round is Earthmarque’s very first event and brings together some sixty ceramicists in an eye-popping display of the possibilities of clay. Spontaneous, rapid-fired Raku pots will sit alongside adventurous and experimental forms, all drawn from the worldwide network of great potters that Barry has built up over nearly a quarter of a century in the business. Ceramics in the Round will be a mecca for the avid art collector but with prices starting from as little as £10 for an original, hand-made piece, it also offers plenty for the first-time buyer.

Above all it will be fun. ‘Earthmarque exhibitions will be enjoyable and fruitful for all,’ Wilson emphasises, ‘whether you’re an experienced ceramicist or a newcomer. Meeting and chatting with potters face-to-face offers unique insights into what can often seem to be a rather arcane and solitary world, and the potters themselves really enjoy having the opportunity to talk about their work and what inspires it.’

As part of this drive to demystify the potter’s world, Ceramics in the Round also includes a programme of talks and demonstrations by some of the leading practitioners. Kids, too, will have the chance to get their hands on some clay and bring home their own creations.

Ceramics in the Round runs from 10am – 4.30pm on Saturday 19 to Sunday 20 April. Admission is £4 for adults and all children go free.
